Development of KnowMapped, a platform for creating, exploring, and sharing visual knowledge maps

KnowMapped is an Education Futures initiative designed to help people make complex ideas, relationships, and bodies of knowledge easier to see and understand. The platform combines visual knowledge mapping with AI-assisted generation, allowing users to build maps manually or generate them from source documents while retaining control over the resulting structure, concepts, and relationships.

KnowMapped was developed to make complex information easier to understand, organize, and communicate. It helps users turn documents, ideas, and research into visual maps that show the relationships among concepts, while giving them full control to revise, expand, and reorganize the result. AI can accelerate the first draft of a map, but the map remains a working structure that users shape through their own judgment.

Approach

KnowMapped was developed around the principle that knowledge structures should remain visible, editable, portable, and beautiful. The platform supports both manual mapping and AI-assisted generation, enabling users to move between automated analysis and their own interpretation of a topic.

The development process has focused on reducing the friction of creating useful knowledge maps while preserving the ability to question and reshape them. Source documents can be converted into maps of concepts and relationships, after which users can refine the structure, add or remove connections, reorganize concepts, apply visual themes, and connect related maps.

Particular attention has been given to visual clarity, accessibility, privacy, data portability, and avoiding unnecessary dependence on automated outputs. The platform is designed to support individual inquiry, teaching, research, collaborative sense-making, and the communication of complex systems and ideas.
