KnowMapped began as an internal tool at Education Futures. We built it because we kept working with ideas that were difficult to represent in ordinary documents, slide decks, or outlines. And we like to present things as beautifully and clearly as possible.
In workshops, presentations, and research projects, we often needed to show more than a sequence of points. We wanted to see how ideas supported one another, where they conflicted, what depended on what, and how one part of a system could affect several others at once. In practice, that meant mapping complex systems with much more attention to the relationships between things. Ordinary mind mapping tools just did not work for us, so we built our own.
If you have attended one of my keynotes or workshops, you may already have seen an early version at work. Sometimes we built maps live with participants. In other cases, we used workshop notes, research material, or collected data to build a visual structure that we could examine together.
The tool became really useful for us. Then we kept adding things we wanted: better layouts, clearer relationship controls, presentation tools, publishing, collaboration, source-assisted generation, exports, and ways to move maps into other workflows.
It got to the point where it made little sense to keep it to ourselves, so we released KnowMapped.
Knowledge maps focused on relationships
In KnowMapped, concepts are connected through relationships.
The useful part is that the relationship should mean something. One idea might support another. A policy might increase a particular outcome. A condition might depend on another. A finding might challenge an assumption. A concept might enable, reduce, contradict, or reinforce something elsewhere in the map. Sometimes concepts form feedback loops with one another.
That makes KnowMapped useful when the connections themselves are part of what you are trying to understand or explain.
A conventional mind map usually starts with a central topic and branches outward. That is useful for brainstorming and outlining, but it does not quite reflect how the world works. Real-world systems are messier. KnowMapped does not require a center or a fixed hierarchy. Ideas can connect across clusters, relationships can run in several directions, and one concept can matter in several parts of the map at the same time.

Build from scratch, or start with a document
There are two main ways to get your ideas KnowMapped.
You can begin with an empty canvas and build the structure yourself. For some kinds of work, that process is the whole point. Deciding which concepts should go into the map, how they relate, and where emphasis should go can expose relationships that are easy to miss in prose.
You can also upload a supported document and have KnowMapped create an editable starting map from the source material. This uses AI analysis, and it is an area we have spent about two years refining. The goal is to identify useful concepts and meaningful relationships in the source material, then give you a map you can work with.
This is particularly useful when the material is long or dense. Instead of beginning with a blank canvas, you can begin with a set of candidate concepts and relationships, then dive in: add what is missing, remove what does not belong, rewrite relationships, reorganize clusters, and change the emphasis.
You can keep reshaping the map until it reflects what you actually want to understand, explain, or present.

Make complex systems navigable
A layout that helps with analysis may not be the one you want for a workshop. A presentation may need stronger visual hierarchy. A dense research map may need more space between clusters. A smaller embedded map may need fewer visible relationship labels.
KnowMapped lets you change the visual arrangement without changing the knowledge underneath it. You can try different layouts, detangle crowded sections, adjust density, change which relationship labels are visible, reposition concepts, and give some parts of the map more visual emphasis.
I like that because not every difficult idea needs to be reduced to five boxes and three arrows. Sometimes the useful thing is being able to see the complexity and still make sense of it.

Maps can be built and shared live
Because KnowMapped grew out of workshop and presentation work, we wanted maps to be useful while a discussion is happening, not just as a record after everyone goes home.
You can build or edit a map while presenting it, move concepts as the conversation changes, revise relationships when somebody challenges an assumption, and let participants follow the map live on their own screens.
Professional-tier users can also invite live collaborators into the editor. That makes it possible for several people to work on the same structure during a class, workshop, meeting, planning session, or research activity.
This is one of the uses that originally made KnowMapped valuable to us. The map does not have to document a conversation after the fact. It can become part of the conversation itself.
Plays well with others
A useful map should not become trapped inside the application where it was created.
Free users can export the portable .know format, which preserves the underlying map so it can be imported again later. Professional users can also export structured data in JSON, Markdown, GraphML, and Graphviz DOT.
Those formats open up uses that an image export cannot. A researcher can move a graph into another analysis tool. A developer can work with the map data directly. A project team can generate another representation from the same structure. The map does not have to end its life as a picture.

Publish your maps
Maps can remain private, be shared with specific people, or be published publicly.
We built a number of integration possibilities: They can also be embedded directly into websites, articles, course materials, project pages, and other digital spaces. An embedded map remains a map. You do not have to flatten it into a screenshot just to place it somewhere else.
You can export static versions as SVG, PNG, JPEG, or PDF. If you want the map itself on a website, KnowMapped also provides a native JavaScript embed, so visitors can interact with the map rather than looking at a flattened image.
KnowMapped also supports publishing workflows for Publii and WordPress.

The free version is good enough for most people
We wanted the free version of KnowMapped to support real work rather than functioning as a demo. Free users can create and edit maps, use the layout engine, publish public links, embed maps, choose from a curated set of themes and typefaces, and export images and portable .know files.
Professional is for people working with more maps, larger maps, collaboration, presentations, or external workflows. It adds higher limits, live collaboration, live viewing for Professional-owned maps, bulk editing, additional design options, watermark-free maps and exports, advanced structured exports, and 100 generation credits.
Professional access is a one-time purchase ($49) rather than a recurring subscription.
Generation credits are separate from ordinary mapping. They are used only when you choose source-assisted generation, and the cost is shown before a map is created.

The public launch
We built KnowMapped to solve problems in our own work, and quickly fell in love with the tool.
It has been useful for research. It has been useful in workshops. It has helped us examine arguments, explain systems, organize complicated source material, and put relationships on screen so people can actually discuss them.
