Note: This evening, I sat down for a chat with OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot, which has been receiving much attention for some stunning (and not so stunning) responses to questions based on a large language model.

I sought to explore the future of education with the chatbot. And, in all honesty, these answers are pretty good. I found that the bot "speaks" like a confident college professor who has no deep knowledge of their field. But what am I supposed to expect from a bot built for general queries?

Despite being superficially cogent, the responses were nonetheless impressive—and a bit concerning on the potentials for misuse, especially if we increasingly rely on algorithms to do the "thinking" traditionally done by human knowledge workers. In education, this can have large-scale consequences. Less experienced policymakers can use tools like this to generate convincing strategies and guidance documents, but are they relevant and sufficiently grounded in reality? We can expect countries and institutions that do not have the resources to hire human experts to rely on AI tools such as this, running an increased risk of making bad decisions from convincing arguments.
